Today we released the news of a freshly inked agreement with Diagnostic Laboratory Services of Hawaii (DLS), the state’s largest locally owned clinical testing laboratory. DLS will deploy the Viewics solution across various systems, including XIFIN, to gain real-time, actionable intelligence about clinical, operational, and financial areas of the organization.
Understanding patient service center profitability
“Our organization is expanding quite rapidly. We’re bringing on a number of new clinics, and it’s important for us to gain a deep understanding of the profitability of those clinics so that we can manage them properly,” said Richard Okazaki, CEO and President of DLS. “Having a clear and accurate picture of our operational data will enable us to adjust our staffing levels and manage test utilization appropriately.”

Viewics chief commercial officer Tim Kuruvilla says he’s “excited about the opportunity to further expand on and deliver our financial analytics package to DLS. It’s always been of the utmost importance to help DLS gain insight into profitability, outreach customers, their patient service centers, and how effective those are for the laboratory organization.”
Delivering public health and population health data
DLS is part of The Queen’s Health Systems, a 30-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to improving “the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all of the people of Hawaii,” according to its website. As the state’s “oldest and preeminent family of healthcare-related companies,” it’s no surprise that the health system’s affiliated diagnostic laboratory is a key provider of population health statistics and public health information to the Hawaii Department of Health.
“We get a lot of requests from physicians wanting a set of results that will help them predict their patients’ outcomes,” said Lavonne Hara, field application analyst at DLS. “We have a very high diabetic population here in Hawaii, so that is one of the key areas we look at.”
The laboratory also performs toxicology testing for state and federal agencies, and provides monthly and annual toxicology reports. DLS anticipates that the Viewics data platform will allow them to streamline the process of compiling these reports, which currently take up much of the IT department’s valuable time.
Additionally, DLS is using the Viewics solution to generate clinical antibiograms, for a better understanding of the utilization of antibiotics and the impact of organisms throughout its customer base.
