The pathology laboratory for a large North American healthcare network relies on data from the network hospitals’ laboratory information systems (LIS) to report on laboratory test orders, results, timing, and operational performance. The lab needs to provide timely, accurate, and effective reporting of test results in support of optimal patient outcomes, and ordering physicians must provide test results and give patients a reasonable expectation of when they will receive their results.
The anatomical pathology laboratory’s existing LIS lacked the ability to provide real-time visibility into lab operations. Obtaining and correlating the data into analyses was an onerous, resource-intensive, manual process, with no way of setting accurate expectations for when test results would be delivered, or when any testing backlog might be cleared. Analytical reports were challenging to create, and could take two to three months to complete, which fell outside of the reporting time frame for the pathology lab — and for the real-time requirements of hospital management’s new Lean methodology.
Lab management searched for an analytics solution that could create detailed, “drill-downable,” real-time or intraday analyses of laboratory operations information in order to meet these demanding requirements. They chose Viewics, and created an environment for analytical report creation on laboratory data.
Now, laboratory staff and hospital management are no longer constrained by the limitations of their LIS, including the lengthy report turnaround times they previously faced. The lab is able to collect data and prepare analyses much more quickly, saving valuable time and resources. The healthcare network management team can get a clear picture of how long it will take to clear any backlog, so resources can be appropriately assigned, and physicians and patients have reliable expectations of when test results will be received. Detailed analytical reports can now be generated within minutes, allowing the team to measure many more variables, and improve more results, than before, as well as enabling hospital management’s newly adopted Lean methodologies.
“We used to be reactive to our operational tasks. Now, we are proactive and forward looking in both our information reporting and our overall laboratory operations.”
And, word of the speed and capability of the Viewics environment has spurred greater interest and broader adoption throughout the healthcare network to include patient, financial, and staff data.
